Our Local Guide to Summer Near Wittering, Bracklesham Bay & Selsey
If you ask us, August is when our little corner of West Sussex is at its very best.
The beaches are buzzing, paddleboarders drift across the calm waters of Chichester Harbour, and there’s always an excuse to stop for an ice cream after a long walk along the coast.
One of the things our guests tell us they love most about staying with Wellies & Windbreaks is that every day can be completely different. One morning might begin with coffee overlooking Bracklesham Bay, followed by an afternoon surfing at West Wittering. The next could be spent exploring Chichester, discovering the West Sussex countryside, enjoying watching the sun set over Chichester harbour.
To help you make the most of your stay, we’ve rounded up some of our favourite events happening this August — all within easy reach of our holiday cottages in West Wittering, East Wittering, Bracklesham Bay and Selsey.
Start Your Holiday the Witterings Way
Our favourite way to begin any holiday is simple.
Wake up early, wander down to the beach before everyone else arrives and breathe in that fresh sea air. If you’re feeling adventurous, hire a paddleboard and explore the calm waters around Chichester Harbour before stopping for breakfast in East Wittering village.
It’s one of those mornings that reminds you why holidays by the sea are so special.
Make a Day of It at Goodwood Racecourse (28–30 August)
If you’re staying over the August Bank Holiday, we’d always recommend setting aside a day for Goodwood Racecourse.
Only around half an hour from the coast, it’s one of those places that manages to combine fantastic racing with a wonderfully relaxed family atmosphere. Bring a picnic, enjoy the racing from the grass, let the children loose on the fairground rides and, if you’re visiting on Friday, stay for the spectacular fireworks display after sunset.
It’s a brilliant change of pace after a few lazy beach days.
Our tip: Spend the morning at West Wittering Beach before heading to Goodwood for the afternoon and evening.
SkyFest – A Brilliant Family Day Out (29–31 August)
If you’ve got younger children, SkyFest is one of those events that easily fills an entire day.
Unlimited fairground rides, giant inflatables, live entertainment, farm animals, adventure play and beautiful South Downs views mean there’s something for everyone.
It’s the sort of place where children happily disappear from one activity to the next while parents can actually relax with good food and a coffee.
Escape to the Sunflowers at Somerley Fields
After a few busy beach days, sometimes it’s nice to swap the coast for the countryside.
Somerley Fields is one of our favourite hidden gems in late summer. Wander through acres of vibrant sunflowers, pick your own blooms and browse local artisan food stalls while enjoying some of the best views across the Sussex countryside.
Don’t forget your camera—it’s one of the most photogenic spots in West Sussex during August.
Fancy an Evening Out? Head to Chichester Festival Theatre
One of the joys of staying nearby is having one of the UK’s best regional theatres just a short drive away.
This August, My Fair Lady is taking centre stage and makes the perfect evening treat after a relaxed day on the beach.
Our recommendation? Spend the afternoon wandering around Chichester’s independent shops before enjoying dinner and the theatre.
Explore Chichester Cathedral
If the weather isn’t quite beach weather (it happens!), Chichester Cathedral is always worth a visit.
This summer’s colourful family trail gives children plenty to discover while adults can admire the beautiful architecture and peaceful atmosphere.
Pair it with lunch in Chichester and a stroll around the city walls.
Watch a Film Under the Stars
The Chichester International Film Festival is one of the highlights of the local cultural calendar.
From outdoor screenings to classic cinema and independent films, it’s a lovely way to spend a warm August evening.
Outdoor Theatre at Fishbourne Roman Palace – 9th August
There’s something wonderfully British about packing a picnic blanket and watching theatre outdoors.
This family-friendly performance of Peter Rabbit and Benjamin Bunny is perfect for younger children and takes place in the beautiful surroundings of Fishbourne Roman Palace.
Even if you’ve never visited before, it’s well worth exploring while you’re there.
Space Safari Drone Light Show 23-25th August
Looking for something completely different?
The Space Safari Drone Light Show promises an unforgettable evening with hundreds of illuminated drones creating incredible displays in the night sky.
Unlike traditional fireworks, it’s quieter, environmentally friendly and suitable for families with younger children.
Browse the Vintage Market at Goodwood – 22nd August
If you love finding something unique, make time for the Vintage Market at Goodwood.
Expect beautiful vintage clothing, accessories and homewares inspired by the 1940s through to the 1960s. It’s the perfect excuse for a leisurely morning before heading back to the coast for fish and chips by the sea.
Family Fun at Tangmere Military Aviation Museum – 30th August
This annual family fun day is packed with hands-on experiences, historic aircraft and activities for children.
It’s one of those attractions that’s often overlooked by visitors but always receives fantastic feedback from our guests.
