Outdoor & Beach Activities – Wittering Coastline & East Head 🦀

Spring is a wonderful time to escape to the coast in West Sussex, when the area feels fresh, peaceful, and full of new life. With fewer crowds than in summer, this is the perfect season for a relaxing seaside break. A spring walk along the beaches of Wittering is hard to beat, with fresh sea air, wide open views, and the return of spectacular sunrises and sunsets on clear days.

Beach Days Out

At low tide, children can run free across the wide sands, build sandcastles, and enjoy classic seaside fun, while adults soak up the calm coastal atmosphere. The ever-changing dunes at East Head in West Wittering are perfect for exploring, wildlife spotting, and family walks, making it one of the best outdoor activities in the Chichester area during the Easter holidays.

Crabbing in West Wittering is always a hit with families and is a brilliant way to keep children entertained for hours. Over at Selsey Beach, combine beach time with a visit to the Selsey Lifeboat Station, which is open to visitors Mondays, Wednesdays and Sundays and offers a fascinating insight into local sea rescue.

If you’re visiting East Wittering, don’t miss the chance to stop by the Fisherman’s Hut on the beach at the end of Shore Road, where you can pick up freshly caught local fish—ideal for a seaside lunch or dinner back at your accommodation. Meanwhile, in Bracklesham, treat yourself to some relaxation at the beachside Rewild Sauna, a unique way to unwind after a coastal walk or fresh swim.

Bracklesham is also a great spot for beachcombing, especially at low tide, when you may find sea glass and even the occasional shark’s tooth—perfect for little explorers. Whether you’re enjoying gentle coastal walks, family-friendly beach activities, or simply relaxing by the sea, the Wittering coastline and surrounding beaches offer some of the best Easter days out in West Sussex.

Explore Chichester Harbour ⛵

Located on the stunning south coast, Chichester Harbour is one of the UK’s protected National Landscapes and a must-visit during the Easter holidays in West Sussex. This beautiful natural area is rich in wildlife and enjoyed by walkers, cyclists, sailors, and families alike. With its peaceful waters, charming harbour villages, and internationally important habitats, it’s a wonderful place to slow down and reconnect with nature.

Chichester Harbour

For a memorable day out, join a relaxing harbour discovery cruise or take part in family-friendly boat trips, including seal safaris and birdwatching tours. These are perfect for curious kids and adults, offering the chance to spot seals, seabirds, and other wildlife while enjoying views of sailing boats and open skies. It’s a fun and easy way to experience the harbour’s beauty, history, and coastal charm.

From Easter through to October 2026, a new 15-minute ferry service will connect Hayling Island with East Head in West Wittering. The route will operate between Sparkes Marina at Sandy Point and East Head on the Witterings side. Services will run from 9am to 7pm, initially on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and Bank Holidays, with plans to expand to seven days a week. This new ferry link offers a convenient and scenic way to connect with the King Charles III England Coast Path (see details below), making it an ideal option for walkers, cyclists, and coastal explorers alike.

Spring is also ideal for coastal walks around the harbour, with quieter paths and colourful landscapes coming back to life. Follow the shoreline for a peaceful ramble and enjoy spotting seabirds along the way—especially popular with nature lovers and photographers.

The King Charles III England Coast Path is a 2,700-mile National Trail developed by Natural England, following the entire English coastline. The West Sussex section begins at East Head on West Wittering Beach, passing through the wildlife-rich RSPB Medmerry and the beaches of Selsey. It continues around Pagham Harbour before reaching Bognor Regis and ending at Shoreham-by-Sea. This scenic route combines coastal views, rich wildlife, and charming seaside towns—perfect for exploring West Sussex on foot.

Cycling is another great way to explore the area, and families will love riding along Salterns Way, which connects Chichester city centre to West Wittering Beach. It’s a scenic, mostly traffic-free route and perfect for a relaxed family bike ride. Once you arrive, reward yourselves with lunch or an ice cream at West Wittering Beach Cafe while watching the waves roll in.

For even more outdoor adventure, head to Medmerry Nature Reserve, where wide open skies, winding paths, and rich wildlife make for a brilliant day out. In spring, you may spot avocets, peregrines, and flocks of finches and linnets. With endless routes to explore on foot or by bike, it’s an excellent spot for families who love the great outdoors.

Whether you’re cruising the harbour, walking coastal paths, or cycling through nature reserves, Chichester Harbour offers some of the best outdoor activities in West Sussex for a relaxed and rewarding Easter break.
