10 Reasons Why West Wittering is the Perfect Easter Getaway

There is so much “egg-citing” stuff going on in and around West Wittering this Easter. Wellies & Windbreaks would love you to come and join us at the beach for a family holiday, so have put together a list of ten great reasons why you should book one of our beach cottages for the perfect Easter getaway.

1. Spectacular Beach

West Wittering beach is one of the most beautiful and unspoiled sandy beaches in the UK. With its Blue Flag status, the waters are pristine and the soft, golden sands are perfect for long walks, beach games, family photographs, building sandcastles or simply relaxing while enjoying the sea breeze.  Most of the beach is pet friendly, even though there is a small restricted area from April to September.  We recommend heading to East Head at the far end of the West Wittering beach car park to let you dogs (and children) run free in the sand and sea.

2. Easter Events and Activities

Easter in West Wittering and the surrounding area is a lively time, with various local events and activities catering to visitors of all ages. The whole family can enjoy a boat trip on the Chichester Canal and meet the Easter Bunny with the Chichester Canal Trust, or head to one of the numerous National Trust properties in the area for egg hunts, craft workshops, and Easter themed activities.  Petworth House will be celebrating its Spring Festival and the sea of daffodils in the gardens are specular at this time of year.  West Dean Gardens has an Easter trail and Stanstead House has an egg hunt in the stunning state rooms and atmospheric servants’ quarters.

3. Water Sports and Activities

For those who love the water and are bold enough to brave the cold April sea, West Wittering is a paradise for watersports. The consistent winds and calm shallows make it an ideal location for kite surfing, paddleboarding, and windsurfing. Many local businesses, including Shore Watersports in East Wittering have equipment to rent and 2XS on West Wittering beach offers lessons for beginners, so you can try something new during your Easter break.  If relaxation is more your thing, or you need to warm up after a bracing dip, head to Rewild Sauna, an authentic wood-fired beachside sauna in Bracklesham Bay with uninterrupted views across to the Isle of Wight.

4. Chichester Harbour

West Wittering is located within the Chichester Harbour Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), a designated region celebrated for its diverse landscapes and rich wildlife. Over Easter, the mild spring weather (fingers crossed) brings the area to life with blooming wildflowers and the arrival of migratory birds. There are lots of great walking trails in and around Chichester Harbour.  The Emsworth to Thorney Island Circular is a great option which follows the coastal path pretty much all the way round.  The Bosham, Apuldram, Itchenor Circular, which covers sections of the Salterns Way, even includes a ferry ride back over to Bosham at the end and you will pass some great cafes and pubs along the way to keep you fed and watered.  Whether you are a seasoned hiker or a casual stroller, the AONB’s tranquil pathways provide an unforgettable experience.

5. Perfect for Family Adventures

Easter is a time for family and West Wittering offers endless opportunities for quality time together. Children will love running on the beach, flying kites, paddling in the sea and playing hide and seek in the sand dunes. Nearby attractions like Arundel Castle or the South Downs Planetarium in Chichester provide educational and entertaining outings, plus there is Portsmouth Historic Dockyard nearby with its rich naval history (and good shopping).

6. Wildlife Watching

West Wittering is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts, especially in spring. The tidal mudflats and saltmarshes of Chichester Harbour, plus the RSPBs Medmerry and Pagham Nature Reserves attract both resident and migratory species, making it a prime location for spotting birds nesting or feeding along the shores. If you fancy stepping off dry land and taking to the water, Something Fishy will take you on a tour of Chichester Harbour to find the resident colony of around forty-six mixed grey and harbour seals. Their numbers seem to be increasing year on year as young pups are often spotted amongst the group.  During the winter months Something Fishy combine the seal spotting with bird watching. Winter wading birds are starting to turn up in the area so look out for oyster catchers, godwits, plovers, curlew, red shank and of course the familiar Brent geese.

7. Historical and Cultural Attractions

The surrounding area is steeped in history and culture. A short drive from West Wittering takes you to Chichester, where you can visit the magnificent Chichester Cathedral, an architectural masterpiece dating back over 900 years. The Weald and Downland Living Museum in Singleton, just north of Chichester will take you interactive journey into the region’s past, showcasing historic buildings and rural traditions. Over Easter it has an enticing Easter Egg Trail for all the family as well as storytelling, a puppet show and a Cabinet of Curiosities, plus lots of hands on activities including watching the bakers demonstrate their skills as they bake traditional hot cross buns – there’s an opportunity to try them too! For any fans of The Repair Shop, you may even get to see them filming.  Nearby Fishbourne Roman Palace is another great day out with the family.  During the Easter holidays, mischievous rabbits will be hiding around the gardens and there will be prizes for those who can track them down.

8. Delicious Local Food and Drink

Easter is a time for indulgence, and West Wittering does not disappoint when it comes to food and drink. The village and surrounding area boast a variety of pubs, cafes, and restaurants offering fresh, locally sourced ingredients. From seafood caught in nearby waters to traditional Sunday roasts and cream teas, there’s something to satisfy every palate. Don’t miss the chance to go wine tasting in one of the local vineyards.  The chalky soils of the South Downs produce the perfect grape growing conditions and our favourites are nearby Tinwood in Halnaker and Upperton in Petworth.

9. Outdoor Adventures in the South Downs National Park

Just a short drive from West Wittering lies the South Downs National Park, a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. The park’s rolling hills and picturesque villages make it a great destination for hiking, cycling, and picnicking. Whether you are tackling the South Downs Way or enjoying a leisurely stroll, the natural beauty of the park is sure to leave a lasting impression.

10. Tranquillity and Relaxation

Easter can be a busy time, but West Wittering offers the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Its serene atmosphere and unspoiled landscapes provide a peaceful retreat where you can unwind, indulge in some family time and recharge the batteries. Wellies & Windbreaks has a wonderful collection of cosy holiday cottages where you can spend time with loved ones and enjoy some real home comforts.  Spend your days soaking up the scenery, reading a book on the beach, or simply enjoying the sound of the waves.
